Continuing training of musical instrument and singing teachers

Since the autumn of 2017, it has been possible to pursue training as a musical instrument teacher at the Heino Eller Tartu Music College. The graduates of this curriculum are awarded the fifth qualification level instrument teacher profession. Since the autumn of 2021, it has also been possible to study to become a singing teacher.  

 

Individuals who have obtained secondary musical education in instrument studies or solo singing can enrol in the one-year curriculum.

 

By completing this curriculum, students acquire knowledge and skills related to teaching an instrument or song and improve their instrument-playing or singing skills. Music school teachers seeking to enhance their skills in interpretation and the pedagogy of teaching instruments or singing are also welcome to enrol in this curriculum. Supporting subjects in this curriculum include the basics of learning and teaching, developmental psychology, didactics of musical instruments and improvisation didactics. Hands-on teaching experience is gained through one-on-one lessons with young students under the guidance of a mentor teacher.

 

Music school teachers seeking to enhance their skills in interpretation and the pedagogy of teaching instruments or singing are also welcome to enrol in this curriculum.

 

Starting from the autumn of 2022, the UT Viljandi Culture Academy and the Heino Eller Tartu Music College are co-operating so that, after the completion of fifth-level vocational training, students will have the opportunity to acquire professional higher education in the school music speciality of the Viljandi Culture Academy in the field of instrument teacher.

 

Entrance examination requirements

 

A speciality examination which involves the candidate presenting a 15–20 minute programme similar to the fourth level final examination in their speciality. The programme is performed by heart. Playing from sheet music is only allowed by prior agreement with the head of the respective department at the Heino Eller Tartu Music College. 

Interview and colloquium

An essay on the topic ‘Why I want to become an instrument or singing teacher’. The essay should be sent to the email address vastuvott@tmk.ee no later than 8 May 2023 (first admissions round) or 25 June 2023 (second admissions round). Please do not forget to include your name.

 

Note! The 2023 graduates of the vocational training or vocational secondary education curricula at Heino Eller Tartu Music College do not have to take the entrance examination, but they must submit the required essay by the specified deadline and participate in the interview which takes place at the same time as the speciality test.

Continuing training in choral conducting

Since the autumn of 2019, students can enrol in a one-year continuing training curriculum at the Heino Eller Tartu Music College, the graduates of which are awarded the fifth qualification level conductor profession. 

 

The following are welcome to enrol in the one-year curriculum:

Graduates of the upper secondary choral conducting speciality (conductor, level 4)

Working conductors and music teachers who wish to enhance their professional skills


It is possible to pursue studies while working.

Entrance examination requirements

Conduct the song ‘Priiuse hommikul’ by K Türnpu (mixed choir) or a choral work of equivalent difficulty for any type of choir

Play the specified song on the piano with the option of transposing it up or down within a second

Conduct a prepared song on the spot

Sing a voice part of the specified song

Present your vision and motivation to commence studies at this level of study
